What this is based on

Every output names at least one verified PubMed source.

Harkin B, Webb TL, Chang BPI, Prestwich A, Conner M, Kellar I, Benn Y, Sheeran P. Does monitoring goal progress promote goal attainment? A meta-analysis of the experimental evidence. Psychol Bull. 2016;142(2):198-229.
PMID 26479070 (verification gap: Most goals studied were short-term health behaviours, and the review notes expectations about monitoring can influence both monitoring and attainment.)
Meta-analysis of 138 studies (N 19,951) that randomly allocated participants to an intervention designed to promote monitoring of goal progress versus a control condition. · weight 1.0 · Interventions successfully increased how often people monitored their progress (d 1.98, 95% CI 1.71 to 2.24) and improved goal attainment (d 0.40, 95% CI 0.32 to 0.48). Changes in monitoring frequency mediated the effect on attainment, and effects were larger when progress was physically recorded or reported publicly.
Epton T, Currie S, Armitage CJ. Unique effects of setting goals on behavior change: systematic review and meta-analysis. J Consult Clin Psychol. 2017;85(12):1182-1198.
PMID 29189034 (verification gap: Most trials were short and delivered in university settings, so the moderator findings come from a narrow slice of real-world goal pursuit.)
Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials that isolated the effect of goal setting, extracting 384 effect sizes from 141 papers (N 16,523). · weight 1.0 · Goal setting had a small positive effect on behaviour change (d 0.34, 95% CI 0.28 to 0.41). It worked better when the goal was difficult, set publicly and set for a group; evidence for pairing it with external monitoring was weaker.

Limits: The pooled effect behind this tool (d 0.40) comes from short-term health-behaviour studies. This planner improves the design of the check-in; it does not track your goal for you and cannot predict your result.
