What this is based on

Every output names at least one verified PubMed source.

Cummings BE, Waring MS. Potted plants do not improve indoor air quality: a review and analysis of reported VOC removal efficiencies. J Expo Sci Environ Epidemiol. 2020;30(2):253-261.
PMID 31695112 (verification gap: An analysis of laboratory chamber studies about air chemistry only; it says nothing about whether plants affect how people feel.)
Review and quantitative re-analysis of 12 published chamber experiments on volatile organic compound removal by potted plants, converting reported rates into clean air delivery rates. · weight 0.2 · The median single-plant clean air delivery rate was 0.023 m3/h, so it would take roughly 10 to 1000 plants per square metre of floor space for potted plants to remove volatile organic compounds at the rate that normal air exchange already provides. Potted plants therefore do not meaningfully improve indoor air quality.
Han KT, Ruan LW, Liao LS. Effects of indoor plants on human functions: a systematic review with meta-analyses. Int J Environ Res Public Health. 2022;19(12):7454.
PMID 35742700 (verification gap: Several pooled analyses rested on two or three records, exposure durations were short, and the review covers objective measures rather than clinical outcomes.)
Systematic review with meta-analyses of 42 records of quantitative Chinese and English studies testing indoor plants as an intervention against no plants or other elements, on physiological, cognitive, health-related and behavioural outcomes. · weight 1.0 · The review concluded that indoor plants affect human functions positively, particularly relaxed physiology and improved cognition. The meta-analyses found lower diastolic blood pressure with plants present and better academic achievement, while effects on EEG alpha activity and attention were not statistically significant.

Limits: Watering guidance here is a general starting point, not a species prescription. The tool makes no air-purifying or health claim, and pet and child safety depends on the species you actually buy.
